Help children practise and identify common letter strings in one-syllable words with the help of these word spinners. Once cut out and assembled using a split pin, children can rotate their spinner to see how different prefixes and suffixes can create different words, and how the same spelling patterns can apply to different groups of words.

This download contains material contains a series of ‘upper discs’ with a single word ending (’–ab’, ‘–ed’, ‘–ell’) and a matching set of ‘lower discs’ with a selection of word beginnings (’tw–’, ‘sp–’, various letters) – enough to create 28 different word spinners. The spinners are additionally colour coded to help distinguish between words using different vowel sounds. and a black and white template has also been included so that the children can create word spinners of their own.

What is a syllable?

A component of a word with a single vowel sound and one or more consonants; syllables are, in effect the building blocks of words. The word ‘syllable’ itself contains three syllables – ‘sy - lla - ble’.
