Children can be given sets of word cards and asked to discuss the common spelling patterns and identify spelling strategies to improve spelling skills that could be used, before sorting the cards into groups. It’s a hands-on way to revise and improve pupils’ understanding of key spellings.

What is a suffix?
Suffixes are letters, or groups of letters, that are added to the end of words to make a new word or change the meaning of word.
Suffix examples
- -ing: joking, passing, going
- -ed: jumped, baked, earned
- -er: runner, driver, banker
- -est: lowest, loudest, busiest
- -ier: sillier, wittier, brainier
- -ity: passivity, equity, unity
- -less: hapless, colourless, ageless
- -ness: emptiness, tightness, dryness

Pupils’ spelling of common words should be correct, including common exception words and other words that they have learnt.
Pupils should spell words as accurately as possible using their phonic knowledge and other knowledge of spelling, such as morphology and etymology.
Read further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word.
