This bright, appealing PDF grammar worksheet is an excellent way to practise and revise using synonyms when introduced before Y6.

This primary resource is divided into five sections:

  • Understand
    Rewrite the example sentences replace the words in bold with a synonym.
  • Challenge
    Using the synonym example sentence, create 3 more pairs of sentences which use synonyms to compare animals.
  • Test
    Circle the two words which are synonyms in the example sentences, then link five words to their synonyms.
  • Explain
    Using your own words, explain what a synonym is, using 3 examples.
  • Apply
  • Write a short passage trying to convince your friends to eat more healthy food, using pairs of synonyms in at least three sentences to show that healthy food can be just as nice as unhealthy food.

Activities include SATs style questions and opportunities for creative writing responses, with eye-catching images as prompts.

What is a synonym?

A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word or phrase.
