Unit overview
This writing unit for Year 2 is built around an original text by Joshua Seigal - an example of a mesostic poem about a minibeast. The example text is available as a PDF in three versions (plain, illustrated and annotated); annotated and non-annotated PowerPoint presentations are also included.

In this two-week unit, pupils will explore how the poem is organised, identifying the hidden word and how the poet has incorporated it into the poem. Pupils will investigate compound nouns by creating a variety of insect names. Pupils will also learn how adjectives are used to create noun phrases and have the opportunity to write sentences punctuated with question and exclamation marks. In the final writing task, pupils will write their own mesostic poems based on the model text, describing a minibeast and its habitat.

Key curriculum skills
Three fully-resourced lessons are included for the following Year 1 English objectives, which can form part of the unit or be taught discretely:

1. Vocabulary: to form nouns by compounding words
Pupils will: learn how words can be combined to create compound nouns. They will create names for minibeasts by compounding words and they can be encouraged to think about how those words might describe characteristics of the animals.

2. Grammar: to use adjectives to create noun phrases
Pupils will: learn how to create noun phrases by adding adjectives before the noun to add description. Pupils will collect ideas that they could use to describe minibeasts and their habitats before using their ideas in their own writing.

3. Punctuation: to use question marks and exclamation marks to punctuate sentences
Pupils will: write sentences punctuated with question and exclamation marks about minibeasts. They will learn when each punctuation mark should be used in question and exclamation sentences, as well as how the exclamation mark can be used to show strong emotion such as delight, surprise or anger.

Additional teaching points to teach or revisit:

  • using subordinating conjunctions
  • using an apostrophe to punctuate contracted words
  • proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • aloud what they have written

Year 2 words: featured vocabulary
Common exception words: floor behind wild climb cold beautiful fast eye water plant
Tier 2 words: huddling, scuttle
Tier 3 words: antennae, crustacean, environment, habitat, predator, shell

“I’m really impressed with the quality”

I just wanted to say that I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the resources on your site, the different approaches and the use of colour are refreshing to see (your conjunctions display material is great). I’ll be using a number of them come September.

“It’s what teachers need”

Thank you for the great resources. It has been a joy to discover your website and find such useful resources that clearly understand what teachers need to support their classes.

“Child-friendly, but not childish!”

I am really impressed by your resources - they are really child friendly (without looking childish!). I have paid for membership because I can see I will be able to use them to supplement my work in the next school year

“Takes the pressure off parents”

Plazoom has been a big help with Lilly’s English sessions at home, it’s hard as a parent to know what resources to use and what’s the best way to teach our children, but this just takes so much pressure off and is so easy to download and use. I love that it caters for different year groups, so you know your child’s doing the right level of work for their age.

“The quality of task is excellent”

I think there are a good range of resources on the site that are well thought through and there are some really interesting elements to the offering that I haven’t seen elsewhere. The quality of task is excellent.

Lucy Starbuck Braidley

Y5 teacher and English lead

“This would really improve writing”

The interactive classroom display materials are excellent. The completed pictures are really useful to spark ideas for the pupils then to come up with their own. I could see how these could be used as a lesson and I think they would really improve writing. I love the idea they are then on display to refer to during writing sessions.

Louise Atkinson

primary teacher, Carlisle

“Easy to build into lessons”

I like the Grammar Burst collection, with its idea of a particular aspect of grammar being taught on consecutive days in ‘short bursts’, each session building on the last. These could easily be built into English lessons as starters!

Sophie Bartlett

Y5/6 teacher

“Imaginative and relevant to the curriculum”

I’m really impressed with the range and quality of resources on Plazoom, all learning styles and abilities are accommodated and it’s very clear that they are designed to support teachers - activities are imaginative and relevant to the curriculum.
