These bright, appealing grammar worksheets are a great help for practising and revising the use of compound words in Y2. There are three worksheets in total, covering the following five sections – ‘understand’, ‘challenge’, ‘test’, ‘explain’ and ‘apply’.

  • Understand

Students match a selection of blue words with a series of red words to create 10 compound words.

  • Challenge

Students write three sentences, each including a compound word, in response to a trio of image prompts.

  • Test

Students identify the constituent words of existing compound words; pick out compound words within sentences; and complete five sentences with missing compound words.

  • Explain

‘Using your own words, explain what a compound word is.’

  • Apply

Students compose a brief story that uses at least 5 compound words; they have the option to choose from a selection of 48 compound words contained within a grid or use their own suggestions.

  • What is a compound word?
