This worksheet is an excellent way for pupils in Key Stage 2 to revise and practise recognising and using metaphors. It contains examples of KS2 metaphors and five different challenges, which can be tackled during one lesson or spread over a number of teaching sessions.

Questions encourage creative responses as well as revision, and include interesting images to stimulate ideas.

This primary resource is divided into five sections:

  • Understand
Underline the metaphors in the passage
  • Challenge
Explain, using your own words what a metaphor is and how it is different from a simile. Then, use the image provided to try to explain what you think a visual metaphor is, and what the image is metaphorically saying
  • Test
Tick the sentences that include metaphors, then write down the meanings of the metaphors given
  • Explain
Use the image provided to imagine that you are on the street shown. How do you feel? Use 3 metaphors to describe what it is like to be here
  • Apply
Use the image provided to imagine that you have encountered this dragon. What is it like? Write a description of the creature, using metaphors to highlight some of its characteristics. Remember to use all of your senses.

What is a metaphor?

A metaphor is a figure of speech where you say one thing (figuratively) is another thing.
