These PDF worksheets, covering words ending in -cian, -sion, -ssion or -tion, are an excellent way for children in Y3/4 to revise and practise these spelling patterns.

The worksheets include five different activities in which children look at spelling patterns, identify misspelt words and apply their spellings in context. They can be used within lessons, as an assessment or as a homework task.

This primary resource is divided into five sections:

  • Tips
    This offers typical rules and an example for each of these suffixes, with space for children to add their own example
  • Check
    Circle the correctly spelt words, add the correct suffix to words and write the root words for the words listed
  • Use
    Use the image and words provided add -tion or -sion to each word then write out a sentence using your new word
  • Change
    Read each sentence and change the underlined word or phrase for a synonym which ends in -cian, -sion, -ssion or -tion
  • Apply
    Write a short passage about the image provided, including as many of the words ‘mention’, ‘occasion’, ‘position’, ‘possession’ and ‘question’ as you can

Pupils’ spelling of common words should be correct, including common exception words and other words that they have learnt.

Pupils should spell words as accurately as possible using their phonic knowledge and other knowledge of spelling, such as morphology and etymology.

Read further exception words, noting the unusual correspondences between spelling and sound, and where these occur in the word.
