These worksheets, covering ‘ough’ words, are an excellent way for children to revise and practise these Year 5 and 6 spelling words.

The worksheets include five different activities in which children look at spelling patterns, identify misspelt words and apply their spellings in context. They can be used within lessons, as an assessment or as a homework task.

What is included in this primary resource?

  • Tips
    Advise and examples of the various sounds ‘ough’ words make, with space to provide your own examples
  • Check
    Circle the words that are spelt correctly, then place the words into the correct sentences
  • Use
    Use the images provided and the accompanying words to write a sentence for each
  • Change
    Read each sentence and change the underlined word or phrase for a synonym which includes the letter string ‘ough’
  • Apply
    Create three different sentences which use at least six differently sounding ‘ough’ letter strings

National Curriculum English programme of study links

Pupils should be taught to:

Use further prefixes and suffixes and understand the guidance for adding them

Use knowledge of morphology and etymology in spelling and understand that the spelling of some words needs to be learnt specifically, as listed in English Appendix 1

Use dictionaries to check the spelling and meaning of words

Use the first three or four letters of a word to check spelling, meaning or both of these in a dictionary
