Three main uses of the word ‘and’ are explored in this session: to join words together to clarify descriptions and action; to repeat words for emphasis; and to join clauses of information together to create longer sentences. We begin by looking at how ‘and’ can be used to create coherence in children’s writing by combining words and noun phrases, before moving on to the repeated use of ‘and’ for emphasis. When it comes to writing longer sentences, we look at how ‘and’ can create an equal relationship between two clauses, pausing to reflect on the difference between subordinating and coordinating conjunctions.
