This 3-page worksheet for children in years 5 and 6 is an excellent way of revising and practising words ending in -cial or -tial. Students can be set the following five activities as part of a classroom lesson, for assessment purposes or as a homework task:

  • Circle misspelt -cial and -tial words
  • Complete partial sentences by correctly finishing -tial and -cial words
  • Starting with an image prompt, add -tial or -cial to an incomplete word and use that word in a sentence about the picture
  • Replace the underlined words or phrases in five different sentences with synonyms that end in -cial or -tial
  • Write a short passage in response to an image prompt that includes as many -cial and -tial words as possible from a pre-selected list of five

National Curriculum English programme of study links

Statutory spelling requirements: endings which sound like /ʃəl/ – ‘-cial’ is common after a vowel letter and ‘-tial’ after a consonant letter, but there are some exceptions.
