KS1 Descriptive Writing Pack: Autumn (the changing seasons)

Explore autumn with pupils in Years 1 and 2, identifying how the weather changes in autumnal months. Encourage pupils to use all their senses to describe autumn using images in the resource pack or by exploring your school grounds or local area. Pupils will then have an opportunity to write a short description of autumn using the senses, using a model text as inspiration for their own writing.

The activities in the resource pack will support learning in science and English lessons in Key Stage 1.

• Year 1 Composition – To write sentences by: saying out loud what they are going to write about; composing a sentence orally before writing it.
• Year 2 Composition – To consider what they are going to write before beginning by: planning or saying out loud what they are going to write about; writing down ideas and/or new words, including new vocabulary; encapsulating what they want to say, sentence by sentence. 
• Year 2 VGP – To learn how to use expanded noun phases to describe and specify. 

Science

• Year 1 Seasonal Changes – Pupils should be taught to observe changes over the seasons.
• Year 1 Animals, including humans - … say which part of the body is associated with which sense.
