Support your class to create a dictionary of new vocabulary taught or found independently when reading. The dictionary and thesaurus templates provided in this pack can be used for pupils to independently add words to a class dictionary.

This resource pack provides a structure that can be used to create a class dictionary and identify the information that a dictionary may contain. These resources can be used to develop vocabulary in the classroom, recording new tier 2 vocabulary that is introduced or creating a class dictionary for tier 3 vocabulary used within a topic. A variety of templates is provided for class teachers to choose from.

Year 3/4 writing - composition
Pupils should be taught to plan their writing by:

  • discussing writing similar to that which they are planning to write in order to understand and learn from its structure, vocabulary and grammar
  • discussing and recording ideas

Year 5/6 writing - composition

Pupils should be taught to plan their writing by:

  • identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own
  • noting and developing initial ideas, drawing on reading and research where necessary
