This bright, appealing PDF grammar worksheet is an excellent way to practise and revise using the ‘-ment’ suffix in Y2.

This primary resource is divided into three sections:

  • Understand
    Rewrite the words, adding the suffix ‘-ment’ to each one, then underline the words ending in the suffix ‘-ment’ in each sentence
  • Challenge
    Write three sentences, including one of the words ‘punishment’, ‘amazement’ and ‘disappointment’ in each. Then, complete the table
  • Test
    Tick which sentence uses the word ‘disappointment’ correctly, then write a short newspaper report to go with the headline and picture given, and try to include the four words provided.

What is a suffix?

Suffixes are letters, or groups of letters, that are added to the end of words to make a new word or change the meaning of word.

Suffix examples

  • -ing: eating, running, saying
  • -ed: planned, walked, burned
  • -er: teacher, trainer, farmer
  • -est: highest, fastest, biggest
  • -ier: mightier, zanier, funnier
  • -ity: activity, equality, civility
  • -less: useless, sleeveless, witless
  • -ness: happiness, fitness, silliness

National Curriculum English programme of study links
