A 10-page PDF containing 5 separate spelling reviews to revisit Year 5 and 6 spelling words. Each review consists of the following three challenges:

  • Identifying and correcting a series of misspelt words from a selection of 21 words taken from the National Curriculum spelling list in English Appendix 1
  • Unscrambling five of the words included in the above selection
  • Writing four words and spelling them correctly, when prompted by their respective definitions

National Curriculum English programme of study links

Pupils should be taught to use knowledge of morphology and etymology in spelling and understanding that the spelling of some words need to be learnt specifically, as listed in English Appendix 1.

Pupils should be taught to spell:

  • Endings which sound like /ʃəs/ spelt –cious or –tious
  • Endings which sound like /ʃəl/
  • Words ending in –ant, –ance / –ancy, –ent, –ence / –ency
  • Words ending in –able and –ible, words ending in –ably and –ibly
  • Words with the /i:/ sound spelt ei after c
  • Words containing the letter-string ough
  • Words with ‘silent’ letters
  • Homophones and other words that are often confused
