This unit of work is based on the article ‘Perfect Primates!’ from issue 8 of Animal Planet magazine (included). Pupils will learn about evolution and inheritance by investigating the features that all primates have in common and how they are all descended from a common ancestor.

The article is also used to develop comprehension skills and inspire writing, with the opportunity to create non-chronological reports about primates that they have looked at through the activities in the resource pack and the magazine article.

During the unit the pupils will classify primates into new World monkeys and Old World monkeys, finding where these different primates live. They will also observe similar features across different primate groups, including humans, identifying similarities and differences between them. There is also the opportunity to research a primate of their choice, or one chosen by the teacher, to create their own non-chronological report. A comprehension activity is included to check pupils’ understanding of the text and to encourage them to retrieve and record information from non-fiction.

Teachers’ notes are included for each of the activities, with suggested activities to develop the unit further.

This resource pack includes:

  • Copy of the Animal Planet article ‘Perfect Primates’
  • Comprehension question cards (with answer sheet)
  • Where in the world worksheet
  • Primate image cards
  • Human evolution images
  • Primate research sheet
  • Planning sheet: non-chronological report
  • Themed writing paper
