Museums are fascinating places. But have you noticed how many of the amazing items they display do not come from our country? Many of our museums are packed full of things that have been harvested from other cultures such as Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Is it time to give them back?

This PDF resource pack includes a story from The Week Junior about the reopening of museums, plus an activity sheet designed to get pupils talking, thinking and writing about what the article means in the context of their own lives.

Activity ideas include:

  • Museums are fascinating places. But have you noticed how many of the amazing items they display do not come from our country? Many of our museums are packed full of things that have been harvested from other cultures such as Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Is it time to give them back? What do you think?
  • Imagine you are a Victorian explorer or archaeologist and you have just found an amazing treasure from the ancient world. Write a letter home, describing what you have found, how you feel about discovering it and what you intend to do with it
  • Write a recount of the last time you went to a museum. Remember to use all the conventions of a personal recount (first person, past tense, personal opinions and so on), describing some of the most interesting artefacts you saw
  • Research five artefacts in the British Museum’s collection that you would most like to see. For each one, write a brief factfile about it, explaining what it is, when it dates from, which culture it represents and any other details, such as what it is made of
