There are growing calls to cancel the 2021 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This resources pack includes an article from The Week Junior magazine, along with a sheet of activities designed to get children thinking, talking and writing about what the story means to them.

Activities include:

  • Of course we should cancel – or at least postpone – the Tokyo Olympics! Who would prioritise a glorified sports day above the need to protect lives? Or is this a step too far? We now know what we are dealing with, so proper precautions can be put in place. In any case, don’t we all need a huge event like this to bring the world together and take our minds off Covid, if only for a couple of weeks? What do you think?
  • Using a playscript format, write a dialogue between a parent and a child where the youngster’s birthday party has had to be cancelled.
  • Write a news report about a sporting event you have been involved with.
  • Research the life of a British Olympic gold medal winner and write a brief biography of that person, including details of their great triumph.
