Pets are important and valued members of many families and pupils in KS2 may have experience of owning a pet, including some responsibility for looking after it.

Discuss with pupils which animals make the perfect pet using the resources in this pack. A class debate can take place, with pupils arguing which pet is the best, before writing their own discussion texts about pets (balanced arguments and/or a single viewpoint).

Pupils will draw their perfect pet, adding descriptions of them and what
makes that particular animal the perfect pet. They will then debate with their classmates as to which animal is, indeed, the best pet before using this information to write their own discussion texts. Teachers can use the tasks to introduce cohesive devices to link ideas in discussion texts and develop speaking and listening skills.
