There are many different types of determiners and we begin this session by identifying what these are (although it is not essential for children to be able to name them). For the sake of clarity, we see how some words can be both determiners and pronouns, but that not all pronouns are determiners. Riddles present a useful way for children to test their knowledge of grammar and course creator Shareen Wilkinson shares some examples of how these can be used to develop understanding of determiners. Determiners have caused children some issues in previous SATs papers and so we look at an example of a question that less than 30% of children answered correctly. We see how a clear definition of the term and familiarity with a full range of examples would have helped more pupils provide the correct solution. Then when it comes to practising determiners in the classroom, we sample some useful approaches that both check understanding and demonstrate how using different determiners has an impact on the meaning of sentences.

An experienced primary school teacher and senior leader, Shareen currently runs a successful education consultancy in London. Working with LAs across the country, she has an extensive track record of raising standards in English.
