Real Writing Year 5 - Unit 11
Model text: Visit Yorkshire! by Jon Mayhew
Curriculum Links: Geography (name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom)

Unit overview
This writing unit for Year 5 is built around an original model text by Jon Mayhew; a persuasive leaflet encouraging people to visit Yorkshire. The example text is available as a PDF in three versions (plain, illustrated and annotated); annotated and non-annotated PowerPoint presentations are also included.

In this 2-week unit, pupils will look at the features of a persuasive leaflet. They will learn how headings help to organise information and investigate a variety of devices that help to persuade. Pupils will be asked to create their own persuasive leaflet to encourage tourists to visit.

Key curriculum skills
Two fully resourced lessons are included for Year 5 English objectives.

1. Vocabulary - To use knowledge of morphology and etymology in spelling
Pupils will: Make new words from root words provided on cards, and find out whether the root originates from Greek or Latin. Use the new words they have discovered in sentences to show they understand their definitions. Gather a class collection of root words and combine them with prefixes and suffixes.

2. Grammar - To use relative clauses beginning with who, which, where, when, whose, that or with an implied relative pronoun
Pupils will: Add suitable pronouns to given sentences. Using images as prompts, write a range of relative clauses that include relative pronouns. Write a descriptive paragraph, using relative clauses to add information about the noun for the reader.
