Real Writing Year 5 - Unit 3
Model text: A Chilli Day
Curriculum Links: Science (Earth and Space)

Unit overview

This writing unit for Year 5 is built around an original model text by Jon Mayhew; a hilarious story about an alien invasion in the school playground. The example text is available as a PDF in three versions (plain, illustrated and annotated); annotated and non-annotated PowerPoint presentations are also included.

In this three-week unit, pupils will engage closely with the model text, considering how the author conveys character, creates settings and atmosphere and uses dialogue to advance the action. Finally, they will structure and write a science-fiction narrative of their own, written in the first person.
