Real Comprehension
  • Built in progression from years 1-6
  • 54 original texts to explore
  • Thematic structure encourages sophisticated understanding

Explore real-world compassion and global citizenship with this fully resourced Year 2 reading comprehension unit.

Centred on Khalsa Aid: How Sikhs Care for Others – an original non-fiction text by author Lucy Strange – the unit introduces children to the inspiring story of Ravi Singh, a Sikh humanitarian who founded an international aid charity.

It also gives pupils the tools to read non-fiction texts with increasing confidence and independence.

The pack includes two versions of the text: one plain and one illustrated. PowerPoint formats are provided for whole-class display, with and without reading highlights.

A fully annotated teacher version supports close reading and shows where to pause for discussion, visualisation, drama or clarification.

Children will learn about Sikh values such as kindness, equality and service, and how these values inspired real-world action.

Using words in context

Across two vocabulary-focused teaching sequences, pupils explore the key words care and kindness. PowerPoint slides break down each word's meaning and usage, and help children use them in context. Worksheets and class discussion extend this focus into sentence work, vocabulary building and personal reflection.

The Big Questions resources support deeper thinking and comprehension, encouraging children to ask and answer thoughtful questions about the text.

Additional resources help pupils organise and express their learning, from mind maps to personal response tasks. These include writing a letter to Ravi Singh and revisiting the full text through retrieval and inference questions.

This unit forms part of the Real Comprehension programme, a complete whole-school resource for developing deeper reading through high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry.
