Encourage children’s curiosity about the natural world around them by observing and describing birds to develop their oracy skills. This activity could be completed as part of the RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch or as part of leaning about animas in the local environment.

Children can talk about the birds that they see in the school grounds, their own gardens or local environment, identifying them using the British birds cards, which contain images of ten common native bird species. Emergent writing can be encouraged by drawing and writing about the birds that children have seen.
