Use this Diwali patterns resource to explore rangoli patterns. People celebrating Diwali use these to decorate doorways during the festival.

Young learners will look at images of Diwali patterns before creating their own using the worksheets provided and completing the suggested activities using physical resources.

Another name for the Hindu festival Diwali is the festival of lights. It is one of Hinduism’s most important celebrations and falls in October or November each year.

Starter activity

If possible, introduce Diwali by reading a suitable book to introduce this festival. Suggestions include:

Look at the image cards showing some foods and other things that are important during Diwali. Notes are provided with each image to explain what is being shown. Talk about the images and what they show.
