Bring some enchantment into your English lessons with this Year 1 writing resource. Pupils will learn how to write simple sentences while creating their own magical spells.
You can use it as a fun Halloween activity, a topic day or as part of a series of English lessons. It also works well as a home learning project.
At the centre of the pack is the WAGOLL model text Strength Spell. This rhyming poem mixes imaginative ingredients such as “ten crushed stars” and “a blackbird’s morning song” to create a spell that makes the writer super strong.
Pupils will read and learn the poem, use actions to help them perform it and explore how rhyme works within the text. They will then move on to creating their own spells, rehearsing sentences orally before writing and even performing them to classmates.
Instruction writing activities
The teacher notes guide you through four clear activities. You start by reading Strength Spell together and discussing its vocabulary. Pupils can use props or drawings to help recall the items in the spell.
Next, they explore rhyme by matching rhyming cards and adding their own examples. In lesson three, pupils use idea cards and ingredient cards to orally rehearse their own spell sentences, supported by the vocabulary cards.
Finally, they write their own spells, remembering to use capital letters and full stops. For an extra challenge, pupils can include rhyming words in their writing.
The pack includes:
- Strength Spell model text (WAGOLL)
- Rhyming cards
- Vocabulary cards
