About the text: Daydreaming

The poem Daydreamimg by Joshua Seigal follows a child imagining themselves as various Greek gods, from Poseidon to Zeus. It comes from our Real Writing collection, which features high-quality work by professional children’s authors. Pupils are exposed to rich vocabulary, imaginative imagery and engaging rhythmic structure.

The poem’s playful tone and vivid descriptions make it ideal for practising SATs reading skills. Pupils can explore the contrast between fantasy and reality, infer character feelings, retrieve information about the gods and their attributes and compare stanzas to notice patterns and shifts.

Why this text works well for SATs revision

  • Inference-rich content: Pupils can deduce the child’s feelings and wishes from the imagined scenarios.
  • Tier 2 vocabulary in context: Words such as skewer, revelling and orchestrating support vocabulary-focused questions.
  • Clear retrieval opportunities: Pupils can locate details about the gods, objects and actions described in the poem.
  • Small extract, high impact: The short poem allows pupils to reread quickly and focus on comprehension and language techniques.
  • Natural links to predicting and summarising: The structured stanzas invite meaningful comparison and thematic analysis.
