This similes worksheet is an excellent way for Key Stage 2 pupils to revise and practise recognising and using this example of figurative language.

It contains simile examples and five different challenges, which can be tackled during one lesson or spread over a number of teaching sessions.

Questions encourage creative responses as well as revision, and include interesting images to stimulate ideas.

This primary resource is divided into five sections:

  • Understand
Underline the similes in the passage
  • Challenge
Use the image provided to write three similes about the character
  • Test
Circle the sentences which contain similes, and complete sentences using similes
  • Explain
Use your own words to explain what a simile is, and why we use them
  • Apply
Use the image of the enchanted forest and imagine you are walking through it at midnight. Describe your journey, making it sound as scary as possible. Use all of your senses and include 3 similes to enhance your descriptions

What is a simile?

Similes are a figure of speech used to compare one thing to another using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Simile examples

  • Clean as a whistle
  • His room was like a pigsty
  • This house is as old as the hills
  • Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee
  • As fast as lightning
