How to use these Talk Like a Pirate Day resources
These engaging pirate-themed activities support young children’s development across key areas of the Early Learning Goals (ELGs), particularly literacy, physical development and expressive arts and design.
Pirate stories
Encourage young learners to tell pirate stories based on ones you have been sharing together. Cut out the pirate storytelling characters and objects, glueing them onto lolly sticks to create stick puppets then use them to tell stories. Children could create their own pirate characters to add to the story.
Pirate clothes
Talk about what pirates might wear, using images from any books that you have shared with children. Use the ‘Dress a pirate’ PDF to add clothes to the pirate character, then encourage children to create their own clothes for the pirate.
Be a pirate
Young learners can use the pirate hat template to create their own pirate hat using paint or collage. Have a range of pirate dressing up available in the classroom for children to explore.
Next, explore how pirates might talk using ideas from any books you've shared with the class. Encourage pupils to use the new words and phrases in their play, acting out sections of the stories they have enjoyed.
