Encourage the imagination of young learners as they explore the wonders of space with this free EYFS resource pack.
Where might they travel? What will they see? This resource supports children in thinking creatively about the solar system, planets and other objects beyond Earth while developing key Early Learning Goals.
In 2025, World Space Week will take place from 4th to 10th October. This resource can be used during this week to inspire curiosity about space and provide hands-on opportunities to learn through play, discussion and creative activities.
What’s inside this EYFS Space Week resource pack?
- Space images – photographs and illustrations of planets, stars and other space objects to spark discussion and observation.
- Rocket template and 2D shapes to cut out – for children to create their own rockets, supporting fine motor skills and shape recognition.
- Teacher notes – guidance on how to use the resources effectively in the classroom, including suggested activities.
Suggested EYFS space activities
Exploring space images
- Look at images of planets and objects in the solar system. Encourage children to name the planets, identify colours and shapes and discuss what it might be like to travel in space.
- Talk about practicalities of space travel, such as clothing, food and movement.
Stories based in space
- Share a selection of space-themed books such as Toys in Space by Mini Grey, How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers, Beegu by Alexis Deacon and Professor Astro Cat’s Solar System by Ben Newman and Dominic Walliman.
- Encourage pupils to act out the stories, developing imagination, communication and role-play skills.
Creating rockets
- Use the provided 2D shapes and template to build rockets. Children can cut, arrange and assemble their rockets, or use physical 2D shapes in the classroom.
- Extend creativity by inviting pupils to make rockets in your junk-modelling area using a range of materials.
Imaginative play
- Set up a space-themed area in the classroom for role play, small-world toys or building a space station. Children can use their rockets and props to explore space in a playful, imaginative way.
