This non-fiction reading comprehension pack is an explanation about Fairtrade. It answers the question 'What is Fairtrade?', explaining when it was established and why we need it. This resource provides the perfect introduction to Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight.

What is Fairtrade Fortnight?

Fairtrade Fortnight celebrates products that are Fairtrade and works to promote those that are available. The Fairtrade Foundation also educates people about Fairtrade and how it helps to support communities around the world to receive a fair price for what they produce.

When is Fairtrade Fortnight?

Fairtrade Fortnight 2025 will take place 22nd September and 5th October.

What's inside the pack?

The pack includes a model text and comprehension questions to develop pupils’ skills of retrieval, inference and understanding vocabulary.

You can use it as part of a whole-class reading lesson or with smaller guided groups. You can also use this non-fiction text as a model for pupils to base similar writing upon.

This primary resource pack includes:

  • Model text: What is Fairtrade?
  • Comprehension questions about the text
  • Comprehension questions answer sheet

Our Fairtrade reading comprehension pack supports the development of key reading skills outlined in the National Curriculum by providing a focused non-fiction text that encourages pupils to engage actively with the material.

Through tasks such as retrieval, inference and vocabulary exploration, pupils will practise checking the sense of the text, discussing their understanding and deepening their grasp of word meanings in context.

This resource also helps learners develop the ability to draw inferences and justify their ideas with evidence, as well as to retrieve and present factual information clearly, all of which are essential components of reading comprehension.
