This resource pack introduces KS1 pupils to Hanukkah, the Jewish festival also known as the Festival of Lights.
Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days, which is why it is celebrated for eight nights.
We also have a KS2 Hanukkha resource pack.
When is Hanukkah?
In 2025, Hanukkah is celebrated between 7th-15th December.
KS1 Hanukkah activities
- Use the simple PowerPoint to explore key Hanukkah customs, such as lighting the menorah, playing traditional games and enjoying festive foods.
- Discuss slides with pupils using questions such as: Why is Hanukkah called the Festival of Lights? Why do Jewish families remember the oil? What might families enjoy about the celebrations?
- If you have a Hanukkah menorah with nine candles, show it to the class. Explain that ‘menorah’ means ‘lampstand’ in Hebrew. Allow pupils to discuss its appearance and purpose.
- Encourage pupils to write simple sentences about each slide using the PDF writing sheets. Pupils can add labels for support or write comparisons between Hanukkah and celebrations they already know, such as Christmas, noting similarities (family activities, festive foods, lights) and differences (timing, religious meaning).
The resource is suitable for use within a topic on Judaism or across a series of English lessons.
