Help pupils develop imaginative and engaging fantasy stories with this KS2 writing pack. The resource gives children everything they need to plan, structure and write their own fantasy tales.

Two detailed WAGOLL model texts show exactly what a good one looks like, allowing pupils to read, annotate and explore the key features of fantasy writing.

What’s included

The pack contains:

  • Fantasy story ingredients – guidance on creating an imaginary world, building rules for a fantasy setting and using different senses to bring it to life. The sheet also includes success criteria and tips on how to journey from a real-world setting into a fantasy setting.
  • Fantasy story plan – a writing template that provides space for children to plan their story, including characters, setting, plot and key events.
  • Two model texts (WAGOLLs) – example fantasy stories which children can read, annotate and identify features such as exciting openings, tension and suspense, problem and resolution, effective dialogue, powerful verbs, descriptive adjectives and imagery. Each extract includes a checklist of features to spot.
  • Teacher notes – support you in modelling writing, guiding annotation and helping pupils structure their ideas effectively.

Curriculum links

This resource supports key elements of the KS2 English programme by helping pupils to:

  • Plan writing by discussing similar stories to learn from their structure, vocabulary and grammar
  • Consider audience and purpose while selecting an appropriate form for their own writing
  • Draft and write using suitable grammar and vocabulary to enhance meaning and build atmosphere
  • Develop creative ideas through structured planning and guided examples

By combining detailed WAGOLL texts, guided planning sheets and clear story ingredients, this pack gives you everything you need to help pupils craft imaginative, well-structured and engaging fantasy stories.
