Guide pupils to explore persuasive writing using this Key Stage 1 resource pack. Pupils will begin by reading two WAGOLL model texts – a puppet theatre advert and a rainbow biscuits advert.

The model texts allow pupils to identify key features of persuasive writing, including the opening sentence that states what the writer wants the reader to do, information about the product, present tense, second-person pronouns (you, your), descriptive adjectives and question sentences to engage the reader.

Pupils can discuss the intended audience and purpose for each advert and annotate the texts to highlight these features.

After analysing the model texts, pupils will plan their own persuasive adverts. They can use the idea cards to select a toy or biscuit, or choose another product linked to a topic or design technology project.

The writing plan supports pupils to organise their ideas, structure sentences using adjectives and questions, and decide how best to persuade their audience. Pupils will then draft their advert using the writing frame, which guides them to present their work clearly and effectively.

Curriculum links

  • Year 1: Pupils develop ideas orally, compose sentences before writing and begin to punctuate sentences using full stops
  • Year 2: Pupils plan writing by saying or drawing ideas first, use expanded noun phrases to describe and specify, and write sentences in different forms including questions

This resource allows pupils to move from reading a WAGOLL to creating their own persuasive adverts. They will practise descriptive language, sentence variety and techniques to influence the reader, building confidence and enjoyment in persuasive writing.
