About the text: Stuck

This extract from Jon Mayhew’s Stuck follows Terry and Jeb, young chimney sweeps navigating a wealthy Victorian household. As with all fiction extracts in our SATs practice range, this text comes from our Real Writing collection of high-quality texts by celebrated children’s authors, giving pupils access to rich vocabulary and engaging narrative craft.

The detailed description of the house, the boys’ interactions and the challenges of their work provide a compelling setting for practising reading skills.

The text’s focus on character thoughts and actions makes it ideal for inference, retrieval and explanation exercises, all of which are essential for the KS2 SATs reading test.

Why this text works well for SATs revision

  • Inference-heavy narrative: The characters’ emotions and reactions, especially Jeb’s hesitation and Terry’s guidance, provide strong material for reading between the lines.
  • Tier 2 vocabulary in context: Words such as hesitant, gawping and sack allow direct practice of vocabulary questions.
  • Clear retrieval opportunities: Pupils can locate details about the house, objects and sequence of events with confidence.
  • Small extract, high impact: The short, focused scene allows repeated readings, ideal for quick revision sessions.
  • Natural links to predicting and summarising: Pupils can reflect on the boys’ motivations and predict likely outcomes, supporting comprehension skills tested in SATs.
